We often hear about the entertainment industry’s reluctance to recognize people of color, so it is refreshing to see two major magazines acknowledge the accomplishments of two of our most respected African American entertainment figures. On the cover of GQ magazine’s October issue, Denzel Washington graces us with that impeccable style for which he has become renowned. His slightly older but no less swoon-worthy swagger is on full display. The 57 year old acting legend is currently involved in filming his forty-second film. In the article he discusses the first memories of being onstage, faith in his life, his thoughts on President Obama and how he felt when he heard the news that Whitney Houston died.
Forbes Magazine put on the first-ever Forbes 400 Summit on Philanthropy back in June. It was a formal assembly of 161 billionaires and near-billionaires who want to solve the world’s problems. During a break, a photographer snapped up a picture of 12 of the super-rich participants and Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett were among them. Their photo was used for the cover of the annual Forbes 400 issue which lists America’s wealthiest people. It came with the caption 126 Billion, which was the total net worth of the three in the room.
Since almost the beginning of print media, there has been a hesitancy to place people of color on magazine covers, although we have seen some of that reluctance wane especially in the last few decades. It is encouraging to see great African Americans highlighted in a positive way.
